Mbappé makes the difference: superior Bayern are subject to PSG

  • Title : Mbappé makes the difference: superior Bayern are subject to PSG
Date: 07 Apr 2021

Summary:

Bayern coach Hans-Dieter Flick did not make any changes in his starting line-up after the 1-0 win in the top Bundesliga game at RB Leipzig. Again Lewandowski (ligament stretch in the knee) and for a short time Gnabry (positive corona test) and Roca (injury during training) could not participate.

Details:

PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino made three changes compared to the 0-1 in the summit against Lille: Instead of Kehrer, Kean (both bank) and Paredes (3rd yellow card), Dagba, Danilo Pereira and Draxler started. With Florenzi and Verratti, two players were also missing from Paris at short notice due to positive corona tests.

Bayern dominated - PSG brutally effective

The Munich team played with a pull forward from the start and immediately put PSG under pressure. Hernandez forced Navas to intervene early on (2nd), then Choupo-Moting headed the top edge of the crossbar after the next corner (3rd). In direct return, Paris took the lead after Munich lost the ball: Neymar served Mbappé, who immediately withdrew. The ball bounced from Neuer, who didn't look too good, over the line into the goal (3rd). While Müller still failed in the early stages due to Navas (10th), PSG remained extremely dangerous on counterattacks. Draxler scored in the twelfth minute, but Mbappé had been just offside in the formation (12th).

The game continued for the first few minutes. The defending champion had a lot more of the game, but Goretzka and Pavard failed to Navas (19th, 20th), Choupo-Moting narrowed from three meters (26th). On the other side, Marquinhos scored the 2-0 (28th) after a soulful Neymar cross after a corner kick. The goalscorer and PSG captain had to leave the field slightly beaten, but Bayern did the same before the break - even twice. Goretzka (for Davies, 33.) and Süle (for Boateng, 42.) also had to go down prematurely.

Before the break in a wild first half, Bayern managed to score the first goal they deserved. Choupo-Moting hit the left corner with a header (37th). With a 1: 2 from the point of view of Munich - with a shot ratio of 15: 2 - it went into the catacombs.

Müller compensates - Mbappé cannot be stopped

After Paris had a double chance shortly after the restart from the duo Neymar / Mbappé - Neuer and then Davies saved (52nd) - the Munich team quickly took over the command again. Alaba and Pavard found their master in Navas within seconds (53rd). After an hour, however, FCB was allowed to cheer for the equalizer: Müller also hit a header after a free-kick from Kimmich (60.)

Did the game tip in favor of Bayern after all? No, because Mbappé, this time staged by di Maria on a counterattack, was simply unstoppable and finally executed in the penalty area ice cold through Boateng's legs to his second goal of the evening (68th). After that, both teams were becoming increasingly tired, but Bayern came very close to equalizing Alaba and Müller (86th, 87th). In the end, after a wild game - and an astonishingly short stoppage time of two minutes - the defending champion suffered a narrow defeat.
