Borussia Mönchengladbach barely missed the big surprise and had to be content with a draw after a 2-0 lead due to two late goals. Up to the 87th minute, the foals had defended compactly and well and stabbed the front ice cold. Real averted the complete false start at the last minute.

Gladbach's coach Marco Rose made five personnel changes compared to the 3-2 at FSV Mainz 05: Bensebaini, Neuhaus, Hofmann, Thuram and Plea started and pushed Wendt, Jantschke, Reitz, Herrmann and Embolo onto the bench.

Real coach Zinedine Zidane only made a change to the 3-1 win in the Clasico at FC Barcelona and sent Vazquez into the race for the injured Nacho at the back right. In midfield, Kroos should pull the strings as usual, at his side Casemiro and Fede Valverde, who, like in the Clasico, pushed Modric to the bench.

Both Gladbach and Real started the game with an early pressing. Especially in the first five minutes, Real in particular had to free themselves from the Gladbach pressure in and around their own penalty area and did so with calm and technical class. On the other hand, the foals also acted bravely and always looked for a playful solution even under pressure. So it took some time before the first goal approaches.

Plea brilliant, Thuram ice cold

These then belonged to Real. Casemiro (7th), Benzema (16th) and Kroos (29th) approached, but Sommer only had to intervene when the German international tried. When Real occasionally combined technically fine through the center forward, the last chain of Borussia was usually compact and did not allow clear conclusions. The Rose-Elf only became dangerous in the occasional counter-situations - one of which was played to a sparkling clean finish. After a carelessness by Kroos, Plea played a surprising interface pass from the right half field into the penalty area. Thuram Vazquez escaped there and made it 1-0 with the first contact (33rd).

Real now had to react, but initially showed no signs of hectic. Los Blancos tried a combination game through the center and came through Asensio to a good shot from an acute angle (38th). Apart from that, Gladbach defended the attacks without any major problems before referee Orel Grinfeld asked for a break.

From this the Spanish master came out with significantly increased intensity. It took less than 60 seconds for the ball to hit the Gladbach crossbar - Neuhaus had deflected a volley from Asensio decisively (46th). Shortly thereafter, Vinicius Junior shot right past from the best position (50th). But Gladbach survived these dicey minutes without damage.

And then dared to be more on the offensive again. First Kramer surprised Vazquez with an uncrowned dribble (54th), then Thuram got the cold shower for Los Blancos. After Lainers cross and Pleas volley decrease, Courtois let clap forward, Thuram pushed in from close range (58th). Gladbach was now completely on top and had a great chance of 3-0 through Plea, but this time Courtois retained the upper hand (61st). Stindl's graduation just missed his goal (66th).
Casemiro: First the assist, then the hit

Zidane reacted and brought Modric and Hazard, who was ready for action after an injury break. While Modric immediately grabbed the game, Hazard could have scored the next goal with his first action, but only hit the side netting (75th). Gladbach took a deep breath and didn't seem to allow anything - until the 87th minute. Casemiro then scratched a wide flank from the baseline and returned to Benzema, who shot artistically from close range. Real pushed for the equalizer and was actually allowed to cheer again, because Sergio Ramos crossed and Casemiro dusted off to equalize (90 + 3). It stayed that way, the late double strike thwarted Gladbach's plans by the great surprise.
