Pogba's hit gives ManUnited the lead
- Title : Pogba's hit gives ManUnited the lead
The Red Devils narrowly prevailed in a hard-fought game against Burnley FC and jumped to the top of the Premier League table. Against the brave underdog, a deflected shot from Pogba was enough for Manchester United to make a three.
In the 1-0 win against Watford in the FA Cup, coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had rotated vigorously. Now another team was on the field. Only central defender Bailly kept his place. Cavani stormed the guests from the start after being suspended. Shaw and Pogba, who had struggled with wounds during the week, got fit in time.
Burnley started bravely and did not let the guests unfold. The home side pressed relatively early and looked for the way forward after conquering the ball. They approached each other a few times, but were not really dangerous. After almost a quarter of an hour, ManUnited announced themselves offensively: Bruno Fernandes' exit from the edge of the box was a bit too central (17th), Martial's overhead kick was blocked by Lowton (19th).
Shortly thereafter, the home side had the first good chance of the game when Bailly Barnes' shot deflected over the crossbar (22.) After half an hour, the VAR intervened: A possible dismissal was checked for a foul by Brady on Cavani . However, since previously on the other side there was a foul by Shaw on Gudmundsson and this was counted, the Clarets remained eleven.
Maguire's header doesn't count
The next tricky scene was not long in coming: Maguire climbed up on a free kick and headed in, but the hit didn't count - he had propped himself up in a duel with Pieters. The Red Devils were now setting the tone and partly stuck in half of the home side: Cavani's direct take-off was blocked in dire need (38th), then Martial failed with a great long-range shot at Burnley goalkeeper Pope (45th + 1). So it went goalless to the tea break.
Pogba redeems United
The Red Devils came out of the cabin more dominant. They managed to get stuck around the home team's penalty area and keep them away from their own goal. They also had scoring opportunities: Cavani finished twice in good positions, but missed the lead (52nd, 67th). About 20 minutes before the end, Pogba did better, but was a little lucky that his degree was deflected unsustainably for Pope and thus found his way into the network (71.).
Burnley does not use the final offensive
Not much changed after the opening goal. The Clarets presented themselves harmless for long stretches of the second round and hardly appeared in half of the Red Devils. This was also due to the fact that ManUnited now appeared compact and hardly offered the outsider any space. Only in the final phase did Burnley appear offensively again and had several late equal opportunities: Brownhill (85th), Vydra (87th) and Tarkowski (90th + 1) all gave away. So Manchester brought the tight result over time. The Red Devils have now been unbeaten for eleven games and jump to the top of the table with the three-point. Away, the Solskjaer-Elf are still unbeaten (seven wins, one draw).
